More and more people use mobile gadgets to access web content, so the need for mobile-friendly websites is ever increasing. To meet this demand, the body that manages the generic domain name extensions, ICANN, introduced the .MOBI domain name extension in 2005. The first registrations were started in September 2006, and the idea behind this TLD is that all websites that use it are required to comply with certain restrictions. In other words, all dot MOBI websites need to be built to be accessed without problems by mobile devices in accordance with the so-called “MWI Best Practices for mobile content” formulated by the W3C Mobile Web Initiative (MWI) in partnership with the dot MOBI Registry organization. These involve how a site is being navigated, the way it is being displayed (form and size), etc.

The rules have provoked some worries considering the fact that the generic top-level extension is the only one that specifies what devices should be able to access a website and the way in which this must happen, breaking the so-called principles of device independence, according to which a site should be built in such a way as to be accessed by most Internet browsers and devices, be they mobile or stationary.
