Launched in 2001, the Dot NAME generic top-level domain extension is the single TLD planned for personal websites only. These domain names can be personal or fictitious names, aliases and/or other labels people are popular by. At the beginning, only 3rd-level registrations were allowed, so if you desired to secure john.doe.name, you had to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were loosened and second-level registrations were also permitted. Already acquired third-level domains remained operational.
